Pierce Studios Remain Open for Yoga Classes
Dear Students and Friends,
It is with a mixture of pride and sadness I write you that after over forty years, the Pierce Yoga Program will close its doors in spring of 2015. Our last formal group series will be from January 11 to March 7.
With tremendous gratitude, I thank all of our incredible students, many of whom have been coming to yoga classes weekly since the 1970's. We have 'grown up' together. Numerous 'yoga babies,' now in their 20's and 30's, have taken the pregnancy classes in preparation for birthing their own 'yoga babies.' I truly delight in that! I delight in the book clubs, playgroups, dinner clubs, walking groups, the friendships that have been formed through the classes.
A heartfelt thank you to Barbara Nardi who has been teaching here at the Program for over 32 years, and to Ayla Harrison and Pat Madden Hudson who have been with us for 23 and 14 years, respectively. The Program has been fortunate to have such thoughtful, intuitive teachers, so interested in yoga and so caring of their students in the classroom. Also, a resounding thank you to Mary Shaw who has effortlessly carried the Program into the 2010's with abundant cheer and grace.
We will keep you posted as to where Barbara, Ayla, and Pat will continue to teach after March 7, since we believe that several of the yoga classes and private lessons with me and others will continue, just not as Pierce Yoga. We will also let you know about a Thank You Open House in March for current and past students and teachers, friends, renters.
I will continue to teach private lessons and hope to teach classes in businesses or schools, to private gatherings and, perhaps, in the PYP studios until the buildings sell (or even later, depending on the buyer). Just ask - I love teaching yoga! It is often the highlight of my day. But the time has come for me to step back from running a business, meeting a payroll, repairing a roof, installing a new heater.... Perhaps I'll have time to finish those two books I've been talking about or updating Yoga For Your Life for a new generation.
It seems so long ago that Martin and I began the yoga program in the mid-70's. From a small building behind the old Quaker Meeting House, we moved to Virginia/Highlands in the late 80's and evolved yet further with the publication of Yoga For Your Life. I so enjoyed, early on, developing our fruitful Pregnancy Program and then in the 90's our original Yoga with Weights classes, both so compelling for me personally. The Program has changed but the essence has stayed the same, providing individualized instruction in private lessons and small group classes.
Never did I dream in '74 when I headed to India instead of grad school that I'd be so fortunate in career, children, and now a grandchild.
I wish you all well and hope that you will keep yoga in your lives. I hope that you'll have the chance to reunite with teachers and old friends in this final Jan/March series here at the Program.
With much gratitude,
Margaret Doonan Pierce
